You are the best for finding this, Morgan! I think the cartoon is more empowering, though, and we don’t see the moments of doubt, panic, or fear that she has to overcome. It would be interesting to see that covered in a comic.
This was so cool to see. I think it is really representative of the strength and bravery that she showed. It also, in my opinion, played into the theme of normalization that was talked about in class. While it achknowledges that she went somewhere that women weren’t allowed to go, that is not the consistent theme that the comic presents. Also, I think the comic played on the relationship of the stereotypical domestic role of the women and the stereotypic role of the male protector- it’s discussed how she was often under fire when working, but it was okay because she was able to hide safely in the cabin. The ideas of the masculine vs. the feminine and the homefront vs. the war front are both prominent in this comic.
This comic is interesting because it focuses a lot on how she is brave and implies that she fought and did a lot for the war effort. However, the actual book describes more of the journey and focuses less on the war. This comic makes her seem like a hero even though she did not do much and never even released the newspaper article which was the whole purpose of her going in the first place.
