Does anyone else watch the show This is Us?? So on the most recent episode it is flashing back to Jack’s memories in Vietnam. In the poem we read today, the men were talking about football when death casually came across them. In this episode Jack and another man were talking about the Giants when the other guy’s leg got blown up by a mine. He then continued to weep in Jack’s arms saying that he was tired of pretending he was not scared. This scene then started to remind me when Kat died in All Quiet. I won’t go on to say anymore about the episode just in case you haven’t watched it! The similarities one could pull was amazing!

I don’t watch it regularly but my mom is always watching it while I’m working on homework so I catch pieces of it! I remember hearing about Jack being in the war and the son wondering what all happened to his dad in the war since his dad never really talked about it as far as he could remember. I can’t say that I saw the part you’re talking about (which now I’m going to have to go watch to find it) but I really like how you connected it to the poem! I think it shows the masculinity of it, this idea that the men need to be strong and put together for the war and how they just brush off the severity of it to try to seem like they are unbothered but then they slowly break down and you see the softer, more vulnerable side of them as the war wears them down.
That’s true, over the past few novels (maybe not so much with hemingway?) we’ve seen the breakdown of stoic masculinity, especially with the death of a comrade, expose the vulnerabilities felt by everyone impacted by the war. I don’t think you can have a novel about war without talking about strength and vulnerability.
I have heard incredible things about this show! It’s on my list of things to watch if I ever get a chance and have the time to. The parallels you drew are really interesting, and while the experiences described are from different wars, I think it really goes to show how some of the themes and topics of war can be seen throughout different wars. The types of emotions, struggles, suffering, et. al. are always present. It is also interesting to consider how these themes are represented in modern media, and the impact that these presentations have on how these issues and topics are viewed by audiences.
